RCM Platforms & AI Agents

The everything options: platforms that run the whole billing operation, and general-purpose “AI workers” that claim to cover many workflows at once.

What the software can do

  • Run the full revenue cycle as one platform — eligibility through posting and follow-up — often with a vendor service team working behind the software.
  • Assign task-level AI agents or “digital workers” to specific processes — status checks, data entry, portal work — across systems that don’t integrate with each other.
  • Apply general-purpose RPA to healthcare’s repetitive portal-and-keyboard work — powerful, but implementation-heavy by nature.

What stays human

This family holds the market’s highest promise and its highest evidence risk. Behind many platform-wide “automation percentages” is a human service team; behind many agent demos is a pilot that has not yet survived real payer portals. The census rated general platforms on demonstrated outpatient deployments, not on their configurable technical ceiling — evaluate them the same way, module by module and task by task.

Automation levels: L0 analytics only · L1 assistant — drafts and suggests · L2 partial — completes meaningful steps · L3 exception-based — completes routine cases and sends exceptions to people · L4 near-autonomous — none validated in this census.

Products shown on this page have the strongest public evidence in the census; every product is in the directory.

Breadth is the value and the risk. Each module must be tested separately, because a platform-wide automation percentage can conceal manual service labor and uneven workflow depth.

Before you buy

  • For a platform: module by module, what is automated by software and what is done by the vendor’s staff?
  • For an agent: has it run in production on your EHR and payer portals — or would your practice be the pilot?
  • What is the real implementation cost in your team’s hours, not just the subscription price?
  • What is the exit? If you leave, what happens to your data and the workflows the vendor was running?
