About this site
What this is
Practical AI for Medical Practices is an independent research project documenting what AI and automation software actually does for the administrative work of medical practices, and what it doesn’t. Behind every page is one question: can a practice use these tools to reduce administrative overhead while improving patient care, revenue, and the working lives of physicians and staff?
How this guide was built
312 products · 275 companies · 39 administrative workflows
The directory is organized around the work each product performs. Every record draws on vendor documentation, customer evidence, independent reporting, and public funding and acquisition records. Sources are documented for every entry.
Vendor claims are kept separate from evidence of actual use. Automation levels reflect what the public evidence supports, not what the marketing promises. When evidence is limited, the guide says so.
Inclusion is not an endorsement. If you find something missing or inaccurate, email me at fx@practicalai.health. I’ll check the record and make any needed correction.
A note from the author
I’m FX Nelson. I came to this work through my wife, who is a partner in a retina practice. As I learned more about what it actually takes to keep a medical practice running (the phones, prior authorizations, billing, staffing, ever-increasing overhead) I became interested in a simple question: Can AI and automation make practices work better for physicians, staff, and patients? Based on my experience using AI in my own work and independent projects, I’m convinced it can.
I definitely don’t have all the answers. Practical AI is my attempt to learn in the open: talking with physicians, practice leaders, staff, and vendors; documenting what is actually working; being honest about what isn’t; and helping practices evaluate tools based on how they really operate.
If you’re trying something, struggling with something, or simply wondering where to begin, I’d genuinely like to hear from you. I’m always happy to compare notes or talk through what your practice needs, and you’re welcome to join one of our weekly calls. Email me anytime at fx@practicalai.health.
